
I’ll admit rest and relaxation are sometimes hard for me. Even with a long-standing meditation practice, my type-A tendencies need monitoring. Activities like stepping off from the spin bike after ten miles yesterday are exhilarating. But when I woke up this morning ready to plunge into hot yoga, I started pumping the brakes.
Enough is enough, I recognized, I need to give my body a break.
How bout you? Do you prefer states of rest or are heightened endorphins?
It’s good to know, because we need both. If you know your tendencies, you can work them to your advantage.
And while we’re training, we need active rest.
It’s a given, our bodies tend to heal more slowly as we age.According to an article in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, triathlete’s in their 50’s had slower recovery time than triathlete’s in their 20’s. While overstating the obvious, the key is understanding what is productive rest for you and giving yourself adequate recovery time.
Your down time should encourage active states of hydration, relaxation, and reflection. The key is understanding your needs.
We need to adequate time to replenish our reserves. We also need challenges to move us forward. Knowing your tendencies helps you plan and execute to meet your goals and feel your best.
