For a lot of us, it’s back-to-school and back-to-work time which means back-to-working out. Here’s three great tips to getting back and staying on track.

  1. I have a client that’s worked out of a longstanding back injury and we’ve been making great progress. I asked her how she felt after her last workout and she texted “exhausted.” That’s often a red flag we need to peel back a bit, find the middle road. If you’re exhausted after working out, you’ve likely pushed too far and it’s tempting to quit. Temper the workout, vary the intensity, and see how adding less exertion helps you recover faster.

  2. Same thing goes if you’re in a lot of pain, you probably went too far. If you don’t do anything and baby the knee/back/foot, it’s difficult to heal. Slow down and learn the correct moves. It’s amazing how slowing down and upping your resistance helps you track muscles properly and begin to heal injury patterns.

  3. The first thing you should ask when you start working out is, “How am I feeling today?” The human body is an incredible machine, and yet we are also affected by emotions, experience, and energies. It’s another aspect of exercise that’s important to see and work with. Many of us quit exercise because it’s too hard, we’re too tired, or we tend to push too fast. Check in with yourself and see taking care of yourself during your workouts can help your release your stress and strengthen effectively. Instead of “no pain/no gain,” think “steady gain/less pain.”

Use these tips as you get back to your mat and make the most out of each and every workout!
