I’m taking a great on-line training and it’s over-the-top with the latest information on pain. It makes me realize, once again, what a genius Joseph Pilates was when it comes to understanding the body.
Sponsored by Balanced Body, some of the great luminaries of the Pilates world are sharing insights into pain and how Pilates gets people moving again in Pilates for Pain and the Potential of Movement.
Some of the biggest takeaways:
We need to get past performance and teach people to create their own meaningful markers for movement. It’s pretty simple, “Ask them what they want to be doing and work from there,” says Pilates educator Brent Anderson.
“Help people understand that movement education and Pilates makes the biggest difference of all,” says Anderson. “The more people understand their bodies, the more their bodies can change. A small change in ankle movement, for example, can make big changes in walking mechanics.”
“Breathing is essential, Joseph Pilates knew this and placed specific emphasis on creating the ‘internal shower’ that happens when breathing correctly,” says world renown teacher Elizabeth Larkham. Larkham encourages clients to open up breathing mechanics to restore healthy movement patterns.
By far, the biggest takeaway is to focus on whole body movement to create healing through the whole body. Healing issues of pain is often about body mechanics and getting the body working synergistically.
